My poor neglected bloggie-boo…

What a whirlwind these past two weeks have been!  I’ve been so busy learning and doing the new job all at the same time that life has shifted about three gears at once.

Lately I have ended each day with a mixture of fatigue and energy of the “still on a spin” type.  So, I end up both wanting to go to bed to sleep until the next month, and wanting to do plenty of things instead, such as reading personal email (something that I am managing to do just about once a week now), looking at friends’ Facebook news and tweets, cooking, watching missed TV series, working on sewing projects, thinking up personal development objectives, brainstorming work-related questions, calling Mum & Dad back, planning holidays, travel, cocktail nights, cultural stuff, dates and dinners with loved ones, reading the Economist (for the past two weeks, I’ve hardly been able to read past the Bagehot column), flicking through Mr Topp’s blog and all of my Google Reader and Del.icio.us stuff, etc., etc.

In the end, this poor little blog has been much neglected, left out of date and lonely in the absence of fresh news…

All in all, I am enjoying this period of manic activity and intense intellectual involvement, absorbing information and understanding its practical use, decoding sensitivities and relationships, thinking tactically and strategically, learning a new language (because, yes, joining a new company is not so different from entering a new country).

My days are very much re-shaped by the new morning hours (earlier!), the absence of running (to be resolved), the train journeys and ways to make them useful, and the decisions that I make in the evening to make the best use of the little time I have for, er, the other parts of my life.  I am still to figure out how to get back into running and workouts.

On recent life news, I should like to mention that I recently:

  • discovered what a hurdy-gurdy is, and heard one been played
  • discovered the difference between Scottish and Swedish bagpipes
  • learnt how to smoke a pipe
  • customised a company t-shirt
  • had a whole afternoon of shopping on Oxford St only to come back home with nothing
  • seen AC/DC on stage
  • discovered a new bar in Camden that happened to have an AC/DC vintage photos exhibition on.
  • created a lamb & mint burger that won much praise at a BBQ
  • registered my interest with Shelter to run the 2010 London Marathon for them, but failed to enter the Marathon’s general ballot on time (besides, my butt still hurts from that annoying tailbone injury sustained in my last 10k race :( )
  • paid £12 of late fees on an old credit card that I’m not using anymore and to which a once-a-year payment had been charged unnoticed
  • discovered a good Japanese restaurant near Holborn and went to see an odd and beautifully performed play/dance show.
  • enjoyed a good evening of music at the RFC that included a really neat piece of Grieg’s music and a great-as-always performance by Sarah Chang, who as usual sported the most incongruously exhuberant outfit (this time, a gigantic neon pink cocktail dress).
  • ate four slices of the hottest-ever pizza — Papa John’s Hot Pepper Passion.  Four slices.

A life full of stuff indeed.

And to wrap it all up, a few links worth seeing.  Because they are fun.  Courtesy of, once again, Mr Topp, who does not commute to Staines and therefore keeps his blog updated:

Nighty-night.

Marathons and substance misuse…

This morning you may take a look at the great pictures Stephen took with the monster-cam, as we were watching the London Marathon runners and I was getting inspired for 2010.  In particular, second in his post is the first elite lady, Irina Mikitenko, who is bloody impressive.  Enjoy.

And, on a totally unrelated note, I wanted to share with you this job ad…  If you would like to climb the ladder in substance misuse, then why not step up and become an Assistant Director, Substance Misuse?

The quick first-day post

Today being my first day in the new job, here’s a quick one before I report for duty.  I am rather excited at the idea of digging into the work.

This has been a really rather good weekend, essentially spent enjoying the first (windy) picnic of the year, cutting patterns for seing project number two (I’m on a roll, people!) and watching the runners of the London Marathon at the 13 mile and 22 mile mark, which happened to be situated one block away from home.  And with that, my mind started shifting from “I will never run a full marathon, it’s too much bloody hassle”, to “hmm, this looks really fun and perhaps, well maybe, I could possibly try to get in to the 2010 one…”.  Keep an eye on this one, folks, as I may well be changing my mind.

That being said, this morning’s jog, even if it was less laborious than last Friday, was still not the best of them all.  It seems I am getting back into the grove of things very, very slowly indeed, and I have to admit that Stephen may be right:  a Fartlek session may well be the way forward to get rid of the countless stitches and cramps I get as soon as I attempt to lengthen my strides and pick up the pace. My appetite, on the other hand, has nooo trouble adjusting to the fact that I am exercising again though, judging by the amount of ribs and fries I scoffed last night at Bodeans…  Ah, I love weekends!!!

And now for a couple of good/odd things I’d like to share with you:  first, a really awesome blog that I will not doubt be reading again and again.  It’s Ask the Bloggess, a masterpiece by Jenny, a delightfully cynical agony aunt who is “even less qualified than Dr Phil”.  And once again I should like to thank Mr Topp for the find.  Mr Topp also provides us this week with interesting insights on Canadian camping and pub signs (the latter being one of our favourite debating subjects).

And now,  on to this first day of work.  Bring it on!

Runners World, sci-fi, and Soho

Well, I am rather unhappy all of a sudden.  Here was I, really enthusiastic about my next (yet to be identified) race, particularly because I anticipate running alongside Patrice, my old uni friend who used to jog around the Lac de la Ramée with me 10 years ago.  But…  as usual, I log on to Runners World to check out the upcoming races, and to my dismay, although I have an online account with them, I am now required to purchase a subscription to their magazine if I intend to view the details of the listed races.  Now that, in my opinion, is bloody outrageous.  I don’t want to buy the magazine, especially now that I’m forced into it.  And you know what?  There doesn’t seem to be any site around that’s as good as runnersworld.com used to be.  I am livid.

Nonetheless, I will carry on looking, and in the meantime, I still intend to start running again tomorrow morning.  New shoes = additional incentive.  Besides, not running for a month apparently hasn’t done me any good:  I discovered in the Banana Republic’s changing rooms today that I have apparently put on two dress sizes.  Or at least one, if we assume that BR have somehow changed their sizing scales (if they hadn’t, I wouldn’t be able to fit in any of my existing stuff, tight — I mean, right??).  Time to get moving!

A quick update on sewing project number one:  a very quick one indeed, as I’m still at the prep stage and washing that piece of fabric for the second time to avoid unexpected shrinkage on my future masterpiece…  More interesting news on that later.  That being said, I am gathering notes and inspiration in view of the time when I will be a sewmaster…

A little about today, as I attended the screening of contender short films for this year’s Sci-Fi Film Festival 48 Hour Movie Challenge.  It is indeed the second year that Stephen and his friends participate in the competition, and we were there today to see Piranha, the masterpiece, shown on the big screen at the Apollo.  You can find more on this and great pictures on Mr Topp’s blog.  I even had the opportunity to participate a little this time, which was lots of fun (and you know what?  voicing over is actually nerve racking).  Anyway, unfortunately the team run into some technical difficulties, so Piranha wasn’t screened today, but we did get to see close to 20 other short films, from the very painful to the frankly hilarious, some of them incredibly well filmed and imaginative.

In the same spirit, we are taking part in Shoot London, a photo challenge organised by Tate Modern.  More on that soon…

What else, what else?  Oh, yes, Stephen has now uploaded about 50 of the hundreds of pictures taken during our trip in Montréal recently.  You are welcome to check’ em out — if you like cute babies, you shall be served!

And finally, I shall close this post with a warm fuzzy feeling somewhere in the chest, as I kept telling myself today as I was walking along Brewer Street, Old Compton Street and Regent Street “oh dear, oh dear, I love Soho so much”.  Only when I find myself looking all around me at the countless shops, seedy basement video stores, hip bars, smelly little streets and my favourite retail windows, how much I like and miss it.  More of it, more of it!  This calls for a ladies’ cocktail night very soon indeed.

And now, on to the more serious “get ready for the Monday challenges” activities.  Ciao.

Clothes, running and work

So here we are, on WordPress, and attempting to create post number one — unless the previous taco-related one counts as a first?

A bit about this week:  it has been filled with bits and bobs.  I won’t talk about the details of my job search, but I will say that things are going well and I am looking forward to, er, be like my friends (!) again, and go to work.  It has been an intense effort so far, full of learnings about myself along the way.  But now, I am looking forward to making a difference in a great organisation and impress a new boss.  Bring it on, people!

Taking advantage of my free time over the past 4 months has been harder than expected, because I discovered that I didn’t have that much of it.  For that reason, the recent break to Canada with Stephen was a very, very welcome pause.

This week I have been afflicted by jet lag and a rather nasty cold, which kept me indoors most of the time, except for a little outing yesterday and one today, to shop for essential tools in view of two projects:  one, to start running again, and two, to sew some clothes!

I had not run much since the Bath Half, aside from a 20-minute jog a couple of weeks ago.  Truly I was being lazy and busy at the same time, but also I needed to acquire a new pair of shoes, after spending roughly a month recovering from 6 nasty blisters and blackened toes.   This should now be a thing of the past, as I have acquired my new training shoes — experimenting with Brooks for a change, to see if they do the trick with my flat feet and over-pronation issues.  And for races, I am lusting over a pair of truly fly little beauties.  Possibly one way to reward myself once the new job is secured on paper – yay!

On the other hand, I was also lusting today over a pair of tailoring shears (I know, this may sound odd).  Inspired by my lovely sister in law, I purchased a couple of beginners’ sewing books and got some of the necessary tools to complement the mid-seventies sewing machine my mum got me.  The project:  a white ruffle cotton skirt.  Today I was experimenting with the machine’s settings on an old tea towel while the fabric I bought was going through its first washing cycle (cotton shrinks).  The tea towel is no more.
